Nautic Horizons – School on Board: Learning on the Water

The Nautic Horizons project allows students aged 14 to 17 to spend half a school year aboard a ship while following their regular curriculum. The aim of the program is for all participants to seamlessly return to their home school without any gaps in their education.

Teaching on Board
Classes are held six days a week aboard the ship, with a maximum of four hours of lessons daily. Qualified teachers implement the official curriculum and adapt teaching methods to suit the individual learning styles of the students. Special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary work. The primary language of instruction is German, but English is also used if necessary. The students receive all relevant learning content required for their academic development. The teachers are solely responsible for lesson planning and delivering the course material.

Role of the Home School
The home school provides all necessary materials and exam requirements in advance. Through a Dropbox system, teaching materials and exams from the home school can be uploaded during the trip. Each student is given a personal Dropbox, which is regularly updated at each port to ensure no learning content is missed. Additionally, exams can be taken during the journey and sent back. The teachers aboard remain in regular contact with the home school’s teachers to communicate important processes and discuss any adjustments in the learning process. While Nautic Horizons provides a valuable learning environment, it cannot replace the entire curriculum of the home school. Some subject content from different states may not be covered, so students need to bring their own materials for these subjects and work independently. Onboard, there are designated free work periods in which teachers are available for support. The responsibility for required learning content lies with the students, and assistance will only be provided if the needs are clearly communicated.

Exams and Individual Support
During the journey, students regularly take exams, which are sent to their home school. This ensures that their performance is continuously monitored, keeping their progress in line with their studies at home. At the end of the journey, all participants receive a grade sheet, a detailed performance assessment in each subject, a project certificate, and a Letter of Recommendation.

Daily Routine on Board
The daily routine aboard the ship follows a well-structured schedule that encompasses both academic and practical aspects of life. Classes are held during the day, followed by group activities that enhance teamwork and responsibility. The afternoon is often dedicated to sports or learning nautical skills. In the evening, there are reflection sessions where students exchange their experiences. This balance between academic learning and practical application in the maritime environment promotes both subject knowledge and personal development.

Who is the Program for?
Nautic Horizons is aimed at young people who are ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities. It provides an ideal opportunity to strengthen communication skills, teamwork, and self-responsibility while continuing with their academic education.

Challenges and Personal Development
Living and learning on board means adapting to constantly changing conditions. This not only enhances academic knowledge but also strengthens the students’ personalities. They learn to respond flexibly, take responsibility, and work within a team—skills that are invaluable later in life.

Conclusion
Nautic Horizons combines traditional schooling with a unique maritime environment. Those who embark on this extraordinary experience will return with expanded knowledge, a strengthened personality, and valuable memories. The program offers a wonderful opportunity to step out of the classroom, promote learning and personal growth, and explore the world.
