YOUR STAY ABROAD ON A SAILING SHIP

Nautic Horizons is a six-month educational program for young people aged 14 to 17, combining school lessons with an extraordinary sailing trip across the Atlantic.

Instead of a traditional year abroad with a host family, you'll discover the world aboard the tall ship Regina Maris . Together with 32 other secondary school students, you'll travel from October to April through various countries, cross the Atlantic, and experience the Caribbean and Central America.

The ship becomes not only your home, but also your classroom. Lessons are fully integrated into daily life on board and are complemented by land-based projects, cultural encounters , and the experiences of the journey.

This way you combine your school days with an experience that goes far beyond traditional lessons: You get to know new countries and cultures , take on responsibility on board, grow as part of a community and develop personally – without losing sight of your academic career.

SAFELY ON COURSE

On the Regina Maris you are not just a passenger – you become part of the crew and actively shape everyday life on board.

Under the guidance of our experienced crew, you'll learn to set sail , steer the ship, and determine your course using real navigational instruments . Night watches and duties on deck and in the galley are also part of the experience. Because at sea, every single person counts.

You'll not only learn to sail: you 'll take on responsibility , work as part of a team, solve challenges together , and experience what it means to rely on one another. Wind, weather, and living in close quarters will foster your independence and constantly push you to your limits.

Safety is always our top priority. Regular training sessions and exercises prepare you for your duties on board and, together with our experienced nautical crew, ensure a safe environment.

For 18 years, the Regina Maris has sailed across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. This long-standing experience allows us not only to introduce young people to the world of sailing, but also to give them the space to gain new perspectives and grow from their experiences.

NAUTIC HORIZONS - YOUR STAY ABROAD

At Nautic Horizons, learning doesn't just happen during lessons. The journey itself becomes a learning space : on board, during cultural encounters, and during selected land-based projects in the various countries along the route.

During the six months , school lessons continue uninterrupted and are firmly integrated into your daily travel routine. At the same time, you'll gain experiences that simply can't be had in a traditional classroom. You'll encounter other cultures, learn about new ways of life, and engage deeply with the places you visit.

A special component is our rural projects . They give you the opportunity to connect with people on-site, gain new perspectives, and discover your own interests and talents. It's not just about visiting countries, but about truly getting to know and understand them.

Our concept also includes a conscious break from the usual daily routine. Six months without parents and with limited mobile phone use create space for genuine encounters, new friendships, and experiences that often don't otherwise find their place.

Our goal is to combine academic learning with real life and to give you experiences that extend far beyond your time on board.

OUR STORY

For us, the Regina Maris is much more than just the ship on which Nautic Horizons takes place – it has been part of our family for many years and is a part of our own history.

We are Rona and Marie Duba, two sisters, and we were incredibly fortunate to grow up on the Regina Maris. Our father, Martin Duba, helped build the ship himself and captained it for many years. As a family, we lived on board, experienced countless voyages together, and learned early on what it means when a ship is not just a workplace, but also a home.

DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS?

Six months of school at sea naturally raises a lot of questions. How are the lessons structured? What does a typical day on board look like? What do I need to bring, and how does life on the Regina Maris work?

In our FAQs we have answered the most important questions from teenagers and parents.

EXPERIENCE FOR MORE THAN 18 YEARS

For over 18 years, the Regina Maris has regularly crossed the Atlantic, sailing as far as the Caribbean and back to Europe. During all these years, the ship has covered countless nautical miles, visited a wide variety of countries, and accompanied many young people on their journeys.

For us, the Regina Maris is far more than just the place where Nautic Horizons takes place. She's part of our family and has been a part of our lives for many years. We ourselves grew up on her, lived on board, and experienced firsthand as teenagers what six months at sea can do to a young person.

This long-standing experience continues to shape Nautic Horizons today. We know the ship, life on board, and the unique challenges of a multi-month voyage from our own experience. At the same time, we understand the importance of an experienced nautical crew, thorough preparation, and clear procedures when young people are at sea for several months.

Over the years, we have witnessed how initial uncertainty transforms into self-confidence, how young people rise above themselves, and how a community forms from people who were previously strangers. This very knowledge and experience gained from many years at sea now inform the planning and execution of Nautic Horizons.

For us, the Regina Maris is not just a ship – it is a piece of family history and the home of Nautic Horizons at sea.
